Road tax in Flanders 2026-2027

Rates, CO2 and euronorm corrections, special cases

In Flanders, the annual road tax (jaarlijkse verkeersbelasting) of a car registered since 2016 starts from a base amount by fiscal horsepower, corrected for CO2 emissions and the euronorm. Estimate it below or check the 2026-2027 rates.

Region: Flanders

Flanders uses the WLTP value for cars first registered from 2021, the NEDC value before.

How is the Flemish road tax calculated?

For a car registered since 2016 that is not leased, the tax is calculated in four steps:

  • Base amount by fiscal horsepower (table below).
  • CO2 correction: (CO2 - 149) × 0,3 % of the base amount for WLTP (122 for NEDC), with CO2 counted between 24 and 500 g/km. A frugal car therefore gets a reduction.
  • Euronorm correction: a percentage of the base amount, negative for a recent petrol car, positive for a diesel.
  • Municipal surcharge (opdeciem) of 10 %, with a minimum of 60,94 € a year.

Reform planned for 2027

Flanders plans a new road tax for cars registered from 1 January 2027, based on mass and a CO2 class. It still has to be approved by the Flemish Parliament; the calculator applies the current rules.

Rates valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, indexed every 1 July. Estimated, unofficial amounts.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the road tax in Flanders?

It starts from the base amount by fiscal horsepower, corrected for CO2 and euronorm, plus a 10 % opdeciem, with a minimum of 60,94 € a year.

Does an electric car pay road tax in Flanders?

Yes if it is registered from 1 January 2026: 107,16 € a year. Those registered earlier are exempt.

Why does a diesel pay more in Flanders?

The euronorm correction is positive for a diesel (+15% at euro 6) and negative for a petrol car (-15% at euro 6), on the same base amount.

What is the opdeciem?

A 10 % municipal surcharge added to the Flemish road tax.

What changes with the Flemish road tax reform?

For cars registered from 1 January 2027, the road tax depends on the maximum authorised mass and CO2 emissions instead of fiscal horsepower, with a surcharge for large engines and older diesels. Cars registered earlier stay in the current system unless the owner opts in. The reform still has to be approved by the Flemish Parliament.
