Who pays the registration tax in Wallonia?
The tax is due by the person living in Wallonia, or the company with its registered office in Wallonia, named on the registration certificate. It is paid once per registration: when buying a new car, but also every time you buy a used car, since the vehicle is then registered to the new owner.
There is nothing to do: after registration with the DIV, SPW Finances automatically sends a payment request for the registration tax and the first road tax.
The formula since 1 July 2025
Since the reform of 1 July 2025, the Walloon registration tax no longer depends on engine power alone. It is calculated as follows:
TMC = MB × (CO2 / X) × (MMA / Y) × C
- MB: base amount by engine power in kW, reduced according to the vehicle's age (see the table below).
- CO2 / X: CO2 emissions from the registration certificate (combined value, not the weighted value of a plug-in hybrid) divided by X = 136 for WLTP or 115 for NEDC. For an electric or hydrogen car, this ratio is 1.
- MMA / Y: maximum authorised mass (box F.2 of the registration certificate) divided by Y = 1 838 kg.
- C: energy coefficient, depending on the fuel.
The result is always between 50 € and 9 000 €.
Base amount (MB) by power and age
The base amount depends on the engine power in kW (box P.2 of the registration certificate). It then decreases with the vehicle's age, counted from its first registration: -10% a year for the first four years, then -5% a year. It is never lower than 61,50 €.
| Vehicle age | ≤ 70 kW | 71 – 85 kW | 86 – 100 kW | 101 – 110 kW | 111 – 120 kW | 121 – 155 kW | > 155 kW |

Energy coefficient (C)
The energy coefficient favours cleaner powertrains. A mild hybrid (48 V) is usually registered as a petrol or diesel car and keeps a coefficient of 1.
| Powertrain | C |
|---|---|
| Petrol, diesel, LPG, CNG | 1,00 |
| Hybrid | 0,80 |
| Electric or hydrogen, ≤ 120 kW | 0,01 |
| Electric or hydrogen, 121 – 155 kW | 0,10 |
| Electric or hydrogen, 156 – 249 kW | 0,18 |
| Electric or hydrogen, ≥ 250 kW | 0,26 |
For an electric or hydrogen car, the CO2 / X ratio is 1. Up to 120 kW, the tax therefore ends up at the 50 € minimum, but a powerful, heavy electric car can pay several hundred or even more than a thousand euros.
Registration tax examples for a new car
A few examples calculated with the 2026-2027 rates for a first registration this year. The values are illustrative: for your car, use those from its registration certificate in the calculator above.
| Vehicle | kW | CO2 (g/km) | Max. mass | Registration tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol city car | 74 | 121 | 1 600 kg | 95 € |
| Petrol compact SUV | 110 | 132 | 1 950 kg | 893 € |
| Hybrid | 85 | 100 | 1 750 kg | 69 € |
| Large diesel SUV | 150 | 165 | 2 300 kg | 3 762 € |
| Electric SUV | 150 | 0 | 2 350 kg | 317 € |
| Performance EV | 300 | 0 | 2 600 kg | 1 823 € |
Used car: how much registration tax?
When you buy a used car, it is registered in your name and the registration tax is due again. The calculation is the same, but the base amount is reduced according to the vehicle's age. Here is how it evolves for the same SUV:
| Vehicle age | Registration tax |
|---|---|
| New | 893 € |
| 1 year | 803 € |
| 2 years | 714 € |
| 3 years | 625 € |
| 4 years | 536 € |
| 5 years | 491 € |
| 6 years | 446 € |
| 8 years | 357 € |
| 10 years | 268 € |
| 12 years | 179 € |
| 14 years | 89 € |
| 15 years and more | 63 € |
A car over 30 years old (classic vehicle) pays a flat 61,50 €.
What about the eco-malus?
The Walloon eco-malus only applies to vehicles registered before 1 July 2025. Since the reform, CO2 emissions are built into the registration tax formula: a high-emission car pays a higher registration tax, with no separate malus. Only motorhomes are still subject to an eco-malus.
Reductions and exemptions
Large families can get a registration tax reduction of up to 250 €, and so can single-parent families for registrations from 1 July 2026, under conditions. The reduction is applied after the calculation, without going below 50 €.
Some vehicles can be exempted, under conditions: the procedures are explained on the SPW Finances website.
Rates valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, indexed every 1 July. Estimated, unofficial amounts.
