Electric car tax in Belgium 2026-2027

Registration tax and annual road tax in Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders

An electric car still pays a registration tax and an annual road tax in Belgium, but far less than a petrol or diesel car. In Flanders, the full exemption ended for cars registered from 1 January 2026. Estimate the amount below or compare the three regions.

Vehicle Information

Region: Wallonia

Registration tax of an electric car by region

  • Wallonia: the same formula as other cars, with CO2 / X = 1 and an energy coefficient by power: 0,01 up to 120 kW, 0,10 up to 155 kW, 0,18 up to 249 kW and 0,26 from 250 kW. A small electric car pays the 50 € minimum, a heavy and powerful one over 1,000 euros.
  • Brussels: a fixed 78,88 €, whatever the power or age.
  • Flanders: a flat 61,50 € (BIV) for an electric or hydrogen car registered from 1 January 2026. Those registered earlier stay exempt.

Comparison for a new electric car

  • Wallonia: the 107,18 € minimum a year.
  • Brussels: the 107,18 € minimum a year.
  • Flanders: 107,16 € a year for an electric or hydrogen car registered from 1 January 2026; those registered earlier are exempt.

Plug-in hybrids and leasing

  • A plug-in hybrid is not an electric car for tax purposes: it pays according to its CO2 emissions (the charge-sustaining value in Wallonia, the weighted value in Flanders).
  • A leased electric car pays the registration tax of the leasing company's region; in Brussels it is 61,50 €.

Frequently asked questions

Does an electric car pay registration tax in Belgium?

Yes: the 50 € minimum or more in Wallonia depending on power and mass, 78,88 € in Brussels and 61,50 € in Flanders for a registration from 2026.

How much road tax does an electric car pay?

107,18 € a year in Wallonia, 107,18 € in Brussels and 107,16 € in Flanders (registered from 2026).

Which region taxes electric cars the least?

For a small electric car the amounts are close. For a powerful and heavy one, the Walloon registration tax is higher, since it depends on power and mass; in Brussels and Flanders it is a fixed amount.

Is a plug-in hybrid exempt?

No. A plug-in hybrid pays registration and road tax according to its CO2 emissions, like a petrol or diesel car, although the amount is often lower.
